Immortalized on numerous monuments, statues and graffiti on
walls around the world, the penis is probably the best known and most
researched body part on the planet. Despite that, many people don’t know some
basic facts about the penis. These less known facts will help you understand
your penis or the penis of your partner and improve your sex life.
Penis average size
According to a study conducted two years ago which involved
more than 1500 men, the average length of an erect penis is 14 cm. The range of
all participants in this study published in reputable scientific magazines is
between 4 and 26 cm. It is good to point out that not all of the erections lead
to identical results. Those whose penises were measured after oral sex had
larger penises compared to those who relied on the fantasy and masturbation.
Does size matter?
When it comes to penis size, size matters, but only for a
certain number of women. According to a survey from 2012, women that experience
vaginal orgasms more frequently say that it is much easier for them to achieve
orgasm with men who have longer penis. Although it is not entirely clear why,
longer penis may be more suitable to stimulate the vagina and cervix. Another
study showed that women determine the ideal size of the penis in relation to
the height of men which means that bigger penises were more suitable for taller
men. Some women would think that stronger and harder erection is more important during intercourse.
Odd anomalies
In very rare cases, men can be born with two penises which
is a condition that affects one in 6 million men. This condition is known as
difalus. Unfortunately, this situation does not bring double fun because in
extremely rare cases both organs are fully functional and this condition is
often associated with other anomalies in the genital area requiring surgical
corrections.
Men who suffer from another disorder related to the penis –
priapism – have a constant erection which sometimes lasts longer than four
hours. In most cases the main cause can be found in the inability of the blood
in the penis to get back into the rest of the body. This situation usually
requires emergency medical treatment that involves injection of
pseudoepinephrine in order to activate the smooth muscles found in the penis.
The history of penis
The history of penis is actually a little bit scarier than
the human past defined by evolution. At one stage of evolution, the male penis
had spikes, but these structures have disappeared before the appearance of the
Neanderthals while the penis as we know it today formed about 700.000 years
ago.
Scientists today are not entirely sure what was the role of the aforementioned spikes and some of them believe that they were responsible for
accelerating of the occurrence of erection and that they were more common in
promiscuous species like cats. Another relic of the past is the bone in the
penis. Although most of the monkeys have a bone that supports the erections,
people at some point lost this bone and the erection relies solely on blood
pressure. In other animals, the bone in the penis is inside the body and is expelled
out for immediate and reliable erections. It is still unknown why men lost this
feature.
